Elena de Ballester trained within the classical Russian school of painting, beginning her artistic education at the age of eight. She completed her formal training at the Rostov School of Art, graduating with the qualification of artist and decorative design specialist, and went on to work professionally as a painter for nine years before relocating to Spain, where she has taught painting since 2005. Her practice carries the discipline of academic technique into luminous, atmospheric landscapes built on restraint and light. She has exhibited extensively across the Costa Blanca region, and her paintings are held in private collections across Spain and abroad. She is a member of the Asociación de Arte de Calpe, the Asociación Dénia Artistas Marina Alta, and ADA y ADAMA.
I’ve taught painting for twenty years, and it changes how I paint myself: my hand is used to explaining decisions, so in my own work I try to strip out everything I could explain to a student in five minutes.
I name paintings after the light, not the place: amber, nácar, that’s not a metaphor, it’s literally what the water looked like at that hour. Personal things, like a window from childhood, I paint from memory, so only the details that actually matter stay in.
In a composition I always leave one point the eye can catch on, a boat, a bird, a figure, and clear away everything that pulls attention from it.
