Antonio Torres

Antonio Torres

Alicante,

Spain

Antonio Torres was born in Albacete in 1969 and has lived in Alicante province since 1989, based in Ondara. Over thirty years of practice, he moved through several distinct bodies of work, beginning with a series on rural life (“Campesinos”) and a series on homelessness (“Indigentes”), before turning, some fifteen years ago, to the subject that now defines his practice: ballet. He works from notes, sketches, and photographs taken backstage during performances and rehearsals, developing close relationships with dancers including Natalia Gubanova and Laurretta Summerscales, principal dancers who have served as muses for several of his series. His work has been shown across Europe and in galleries in the United States, including Atlanta, Santa Fe, Houston, New Orleans, and Dallas, as well as in Santo Domingo, Cuba, Mexico, the UAE, and Taiwan. He received the Premio Ocell (XX Edition) in 2021.
